Green Fork

The Green Fork is the westernmost of the three main forks of the Trident, a river system that dominates the riverlands of Westeros. Its strategic importance was made manifest during the War of the Five Kings, when it became the stage for a battle that, while a tactical defeat for the Lannisters, served their larger war aims.

Geography and Strategic Significance

The Green Fork rises in the mountains of the westerlands and flows east and south to join the Blue Fork and the Red Fork near the crossroads of the riverlands. Its course defines the western boundary of the riverlands proper, and its crossings are vital for any army moving between the westerlands and the east. The river is broad and deep, making it a formidable obstacle, and its fords and bridges are natural chokepoints.

During the War of the Five Kings, Lord Tywin Lannister divided his army. He sent a vanguard under his son Tyrion to march east along the Green Fork, while he himself led the main host south to relieve the siege of Harrenhal. Robb Stark, the Young Wolf, marched north to meet the Lannister threat. The two armies met on the banks of the Green Fork. Tyrion, commanding a force of westermen and clansmen, was heavily outnumbered and outflanked by the northern host.
